Abuja, Nigeria — The Nationwide League One (NLO) has postponed the kick-off of the 2026 NLO Cup by one week, with the competition now scheduled to begin on Saturday, 17 October.
The tournament was originally due to start on Saturday, 10 October, but the organisers have adjusted the date to allow more time to complete logistical arrangements, maintain designated venues and finalise registration and administrative requirements for participating clubs.
NLO confirms new kick-off date
In a revised notice circulated to participating clubs, the NLO Secretariat said the change was necessary to ensure that preparations were completed before the competition begins.
The league also confirmed that the official fixtures would be released no later than Tuesday, 13 October, giving clubs time to organise their travel, technical preparations and match-day arrangements.
The organisers acknowledged that the postponement could affect clubs’ existing plans but appealed to participants to cooperate and continue preparing for the revised start date.
Logistics and venue maintenance behind the delay
The NLO identified three main reasons for the adjustment: additional logistical preparations, maintenance work at designated venues, and the completion of registration and other administrative processes.
The league said the decision was intended to ensure a smooth and competitive tournament for all stakeholders.
The revised schedule gives the organisers another week to address these requirements before the first matches are played.
NLO Cup aims to create more opportunities for clubs
The 2026 NLO Cup is part of the league’s efforts to provide additional competitive opportunities for clubs and players in Nigeria’s lower divisions.
The revamped competition is designed to give participating teams more matches through a regional home-and-away format, while helping emerging players showcase their abilities to a wider audience.
NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo previously explained that the competition was introduced partly in response to concerns from clubs about the limited number of matches available under the existing league structure.
Fixtures expected on 13 October
With the opening date now set for 17 October, attention turns to the release of the fixture list and the final preparations by participating clubs.
The NLO has urged teams to maintain their preparations despite the change, as it works towards delivering the competition under the revised schedule.
The tournament is expected to provide valuable playing time, strengthen grassroots football and create greater exposure for emerging Nigerian talent.
