The match, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, saw the Super Eagles come from behind to secure three valuable points in Group L.
Madagascar took a shock lead in the 16th minute through Ehsan Kari. The visitors defended resolutely and threatened on the counter, forcing Nigeria to show patience and quality in their response.
Just before half-time, George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time (45+1’), restoring parity and giving the home side much-needed momentum heading into the break.
Nigeria continued to press after the restart and found the winner in the 65th minute. Moses Usor, who had been introduced as a substitute, scored the decisive goal to put the Super Eagles ahead.
The hosts managed the remainder of the contest effectively to close out the win, despite Madagascar’s efforts to force an equaliser in the closing stages.
The result gives Nigeria a solid start to their qualifying campaign under coach Eric Chelle. Victor Osimhen was absent through injury, but the squad showed enough depth and character to overcome an early setback against a well-organised Madagascar side.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to their next Group L fixture as they look to build on this opening victory and secure qualification for the 2027 finals in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
