Lamine Yamal scored after two minutes, punishing a mistake by Marc Guehi. Anthony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute on the counter, combining with Jude Bellingham and finishing past Unai Simón. Harry Kane headed England in front four minutes later from Nico O’Reilly’s cross, the ball deflecting in off Marc Cucurella.
Ten minutes into the second half England were awarded a penalty after Rodri fouled Bellingham. Kane slipped and struck the bar. It was his first missed spot-kick since the 2022 World Cup.
Spain took control. Substitute Álex Baena levelled in the 60th minute after O’Reilly lost the ball to Dani Olmo. Baena then set up Mikel Oyarzabal, who chipped James Trafford in the 74th minute for the winner. Oyarzabal also scored the Euro 2024 final winner against England.
England created late pressure. Bellingham forced a save from Simón in stoppage time. Spain held on.
Thomas Tuchel had asked his side to embrace chaos after a cautious World Cup semi-final exit to Argentina. The first half answered that call. The second half exposed defensive errors that Spain, under Luis de la Fuente, punished.
Spain have three points in Group A3. England have none. Croatia and Czechia complete the group. The result continues Spain’s record European unbeaten sequence and leaves England still searching for a first win over La Roja since before the Berlin final.
