The 34-year-old shared the news on social media on Friday, reflecting on a journey that began with her senior debut in 2010 and spanned more than a decade and a half at the highest level of African and world women’s football.
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” Ohale wrote.
During her time with the Super Falcons, Ohale established herself as one of the most decorated players in the team’s history. She won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on five occasions — in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024 — making her one of a select group of players to achieve such sustained continental success.
She also represented Nigeria at four FIFA Women’s World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023) and featured in seven WAFCON tournaments in total. One of her memorable moments came at the 2023 World Cup in Australia, where she scored in Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 group-stage victory over the co-hosts.
Ohale earned 86 caps for her country and was part of the side that helped end Nigeria’s long absence from the Olympic Games by qualifying for Paris 2024. Her final appearance came during the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification campaign.
In her farewell message, the experienced centre-back expressed deep gratitude to her teammates, coaches, the Nigeria Football Federation, her family, friends and the Nigerian fans who supported her throughout her career.
“The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Thank you, Nigeria, for allowing me to live my dream,” she concluded.
Ohale leaves the international stage with a remarkable legacy as one of the most consistent and successful defenders in Super Falcons history. Her longevity, leadership and contribution to multiple title-winning teams ensure her place among the standout figures of Nigerian women’s football.
