The draw, conducted at the World Tennis offices in London, pairs Nigeria with El Salvador, who will have the advantage of hosting the tie. The matches are scheduled for 5–7 February 2027, with the precise dates within that window determined by the home nation.
The fixture gives Nigeria another opportunity to fight their way back into World Group II after their campaign at that level ended with a 4-0 defeat to Morocco in Rabat earlier this month.
Nigeria seek response after Morocco defeat
Nigeria entered the 2026 World Group II competition after earning promotion in February, when they defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
However, their return to the competition’s second tier proved difficult. Morocco established a 2-0 lead on the opening day of their September tie, with Karim Bennani and Yassine Dlimi winning their singles matches.
The hosts then secured the doubles rubber on Sunday before Amine Jamji defeated Michael Emmanuel in the reverse singles to complete a 4-0 victory.
The result sent Morocco into the 2027 World Group I Play-offs, while Nigeria moved into the World Group II Play-offs.
El Salvador to host the tie
El Salvador are seeded fifth in the 2027 World Group II Play-offs, while Nigeria are among the unseeded nations. The draw therefore sets up an away assignment for the Nigerian team.
The World Group II Play-offs feature 26 nations competing in 13 ties. The winning countries will advance to World Group II ties in September 2027, while the losing nations will compete in regional Group III events later in the year.
Nigeria will need to prepare for the challenge of playing on El Salvador’s home court as they attempt to keep their hopes of returning to World Group II alive.
The tie will be played over a best-of-five-match format, with two singles matches on the first day, followed by the doubles and two reverse singles on the second day. Each match is played as best-of-three sets, with tie-breaks.
The February encounter will be a significant test for Nigeria as they look to recover from the loss to Morocco and continue their progress in international men’s team tennis.
