Noussair Mazraoui opened the scoring in the 36th minute, finishing a well-worked move after being set up by Nayef Aguerd. The goal gave Morocco a deserved half-time lead against a Gabon side that struggled to create clear opportunities.
After the break, Morocco continued to dominate possession and territory. The second goal arrived in the 84th minute when Soufiane Rahimi converted a chance created by Bilal El Khannouss, sealing the victory and ensuring a comfortable conclusion to the contest.
Gabon, missing the experience of former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has retired from international football, found it difficult to break down a well-organised Moroccan defence. The visitors managed only limited threats on goal and were unable to seriously test the home side’s back line for long periods.
The result gives Morocco maximum points from their opening fixture and an early advantage in Group A. The Atlas Lions, still among the highest-ranked teams in Africa, will look to build on this performance as they target another strong showing at the continental finals.
Gabon will now turn their attention to their next qualifier as they seek to recover from the defeat and remain competitive in the group.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Morocco’s controlled display provided a positive foundation for their qualifying campaign and underlined their status as one of the favourites to progress comfortably from the group stage.
