The 26-year-old striker qualifies to play for the Cranes through a grandparent. Although born in Accra, Ghana, to Ghanaian parents, one of his grandparents was born in Uganda, making him eligible under FIFA regulations.
Boateng is a product of the renowned Right to Dream Academy and currently plays as a centre-forward for Austrian club Austria Wien. Standing at 1.84m, he is expected to bring physical presence, pace and goal-scoring threat to the Uganda attack.
The move forms part of a broader FUFA initiative to identify and integrate diaspora and heritage players. Consultants compiled a list of more than 200 professional footballers worldwide who are eligible to represent Uganda. Twenty players were shortlisted, with several already joining the national team camp in Kampala ahead of upcoming fixtures.
Boateng is among the new faces who have arrived to bolster the squad as Uganda prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and international friendlies.
The decision marks a significant boost for the Cranes’ attacking options and highlights the growing trend of African nations utilising heritage pathways to enhance their national teams. Boateng will now look to make his debut and contribute to Uganda’s campaign as they continue their qualifying journey.
