The Ghanaian giants confirmed the departure on Monday, 28 September 2026, bringing Tinkler’s brief spell in charge of the Porcupine Warriors to an end just four matches into the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The decision came a day after Kotoko suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The result was the club’s first league loss of the campaign and Tinkler’s first defeat as head coach.
In its statement, Asante Kotoko said the board had agreed to the coach’s request to leave. The club explained that both parties had held discussions in an effort to prevent his departure but ultimately respected his decision.
“The Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Mr. Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons,” the statement read.
Tinkler’s short spell at Kotoko
Tinkler was appointed Asante Kotoko’s permanent head coach in July 2026, replacing Karim Zito ahead of the new league season.
During his four league matches in charge, Kotoko recorded one win, two draws and one defeat. The team drew 2-2 with Debibi United, defeated Hearts of Lions 2-1, shared the points with FC Samartex after a 1-1 draw, and then lost to Aduana FC.
Despite his short tenure, Tinkler also guided Kotoko to the Democracy Cup, where they defeated Hearts of Oak on penalties.
His departure leaves the club searching for a new head coach early in the campaign, although Kotoko say their wider sporting objectives remain unchanged.
Stanley Purl Menzo to lead technical team
Asante Kotoko confirmed that the technical team will continue its work under the leadership of Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo as the club moves forward following Tinkler’s exit.
The club thanked the South African for his professionalism and commitment during his time in charge and wished him success in the next stage of his coaching career.
Kotoko are scheduled to return to Ghana Premier League action on Thursday, 1 October, when they host Karela United.
For Tinkler, the departure marks a swift end to his first stint in Ghanaian football, with his next move yet to be officially confirmed by Asante Kotoko.
