DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Young Africans SC have completed the sale of Ugandan midfielder Allan Okello to Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat for a reported transfer fee of $1.2 million (approximately KES 154 million).
The move represents a significant profit for the Tanzanian champions, who signed Okello from Vipers SC for $300,000 (KES 39 million) just eight months ago. The deal has delivered a profit of around KES 115 million in less than a year.
Smart Business
Okello joined Yanga as a highly rated talent from the Ugandan Premier League and quickly established himself as a key figure in the midfield. His performances for both club and the Uganda Cranes attracted interest from North African clubs, culminating in the agreement with AS FAR Rabat.
The sale underlines Yanga’s growing reputation for identifying and developing talent before moving players on for substantial fees. The club has increasingly operated with a clear commercial strategy alongside its domestic and continental ambitions.
Lesson for the Region
The transaction has sparked discussion across East African football. Observers have pointed to Yanga’s model as an example of modern club management, particularly in player trading and value creation.
While Kenyan clubs frequently travel to Tanzania for friendlies, the Okello deal has prompted calls for greater focus on benchmarking professional structures, recruitment and player development systems that allow clubs to generate significant transfer income.
Okello now embarks on a new chapter in Morocco, while Yanga bank a sizeable profit and reinforce their status as one of the region’s most progressive clubs.
