ZANZIBAR, Tanzania — Young Africans SC retained the Community Shield with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Simba SC at the New Amaan Complex on Wednesday night.
Albert Kangwanda scored the decisive goal in the 31st minute, rising highest to head home a well-delivered cross from left-back Chadrack Boka.
The victory marked a successful start to the new season for Yanga under head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, who claimed his first trophy with the club. It also extended his unbeaten record against Simba counterpart Steve Barker.
Yanga controlled large periods of the contest and defended resolutely after taking the lead. Simba pushed hard in the closing stages, with substitute Bakari Msimu going close in the 89th minute, but Yanga goalkeeper Diarra produced a crucial save to preserve the clean sheet.
The triumph carries historical significance for the Jangwani Street side. It was their 10th Community Shield title, moving them level with Simba as the joint-most successful clubs in the competition’s history.
Yanga’s titles now stand at 2001, 2010, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2021, 2022, 2024, 2025 and 2026. Simba’s 10 victories came in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023.
The result gives Yanga the first piece of silverware of the 2026/27 season and sets an early marker in the intense Kariakoo rivalry as both clubs prepare for the challenges ahead.
