The experienced tactician, widely known as “Mr Africa” for his extensive work on the continent, has been linked with the role following the departure of Vladimir Petković.
Vast African Experience
Saintfiet has managed several African national teams, including The Gambia, Mali, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Malawi and Togo.
His most notable achievement came with The Gambia, whom he guided to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance and a historic quarter-final finish in 2021. He later led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2025 AFCON and secured strong results in qualifying campaigns.
Shortlist Contender
According to reports from Algerian media, Saintfiet features on a shortlist that also includes Spanish coaches Félix Sánchez and Rafael Benítez. While Sánchez is widely viewed as the frontrunner, the Belgian’s deep knowledge of African football and availability make him a credible option for the Algerian Football Federation.
Saintfiet remains free since leaving his role with Mali earlier this year. Whether Algeria becomes his next challenge will depend on the outcome of ongoing discussions within the federation.
