Trailing Douglas coming off the bend, Maxwell produced a powerful final surge to pull away and cross the line well clear of the field. Douglas finished second in 22.68, while Mia’s twin sister Mariah Maxwell claimed bronze in 22.77, upgrading her fifth-place finish from the 100 metres earlier in the championships.
The result marked the second time Mia had defeated Douglas in Eugene, having edged the Jamaican in a tight 100m final earlier in the week.
Historic Achievement
Maxwell’s double places her in exclusive company. No American woman had previously achieved the 100m and 200m clean sweep at the World U20 Championships. Her victory also made her the first U.S. woman to win the World U20 200m title since 2014.
The Maxwell twins’ podium finish added further lustre to a strong night for Team USA, underscoring the depth of American sprinting talent at junior level.
