In a strongly worded statement, the former Ballon d’Or winner accused Infantino of damaging the organisation he was elected to lead.
“Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate. He has lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve,” Figo said.
The Portugal great added that Infantino has lost the support of senior FIFA staff, close advisers and many across world football.
“It is too late to save his dignity but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now.”
Figo’s intervention comes amid mounting pressure on Infantino following the collapse of his controversial plan to sell a stake in FIFA’s commercial and event operations, including the World Cup. The proposal triggered widespread opposition from UEFA, national associations and senior figures within FIFA itself.
The former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan star is the latest high-profile voice to demand Infantino’s departure as the FIFA president holds crisis talks with top officials in Morocco.
