TUNIS, Tunisia — Peruvian international midfielder Jesús Castillo has officially joined Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis on a three-year contract.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder arrives from Universitario de Deportes, where he was a regular in the Liga 1 side. Espérance have acquired 80 per cent of the player’s rights, with the Peruvian club retaining a 20 per cent sell-on clause.
New Chapter in North Africa
Castillo becomes only the second Peruvian to represent Espérance, following in the footsteps of earlier trailblazer Ramires. The move marks a significant step in his career as he transitions from South American football to one of Africa’s most successful and ambitious clubs.
Known for his defensive discipline, energy and ability to break up play, Castillo is expected to strengthen the midfield options available to the Blood and Gold. Espérance, perennial contenders in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 and regulars in the CAF Champions League, view the signing as an important reinforcement ahead of the new domestic and continental campaigns.
Path to Tunisia
Negotiations between the two clubs progressed quickly in recent weeks. Castillo travelled to Tunis earlier this month, successfully completed his medical examinations, and finalised the paperwork to complete the transfer.
The deal had been reported as an exclusive development in the preceding days before receiving official confirmation from both Universitario and sources close to Espérance.
Castillo now embarks on a fresh challenge in North Africa, joining a club with a rich history of domestic dominance and consistent presence on the continental stage. Fans of the Taraji will be eager to see how the Peruvian international adapts to his new environment.
