The development is a significant boost for Malawian football, allowing the national team and top clubs to stage important fixtures at the country’s premier venue in Lilongwe.
As a result, Malawi will be able to play their Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at Bingu National Stadium. Domestic giants Mighty Wanderers will also be permitted to use the facility for their CAF Champions League matches.
The provisional approval follows ongoing efforts to ensure the stadium meets the required standards for continental competitions. Bingu National Stadium, with a capacity of more than 40,000, is the largest football venue in Malawi and has previously hosted major international fixtures when fully certified.
The certification provides clarity for the Football Association of Malawi and local clubs as they prepare for upcoming CAF competitions. It means supporters will once again have the opportunity to watch the Flames and top domestic sides in continental action on home soil.
Further inspections and compliance checks are expected as part of the process to maintain the stadium’s eligibility for high-level matches.
