MIAMI, USA — Saudi Arabia produced another memorable FIFA World Cup performance as they held Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their Group H opener at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, on Monday night.
The result marked one of the early surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Asian side frustrating Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay and coming within minutes of securing a famous victory.
Uruguay entered the contest as overwhelming favourites, boasting stars such as Federico Valverde and Darwin Núñez. However, it was Saudi Arabia that struck first, capitalising on a rare defensive lapse from the South Americans.
After absorbing sustained pressure during much of the opening half, Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 41st minute. Defender Abdulelah Al-Amri reacted quickest after veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to deal with a dangerous set-piece, poking the ball into the net to send the Saudi supporters into celebration.
Uruguay dominated possession and territory throughout the match but struggled to break down a disciplined Saudi defence. The Green Falcons remained organised and resilient, forcing Uruguay into increasingly desperate attacks.
The pressure eventually paid off in the second half.
With Saudi Arabia defending deep and protecting their slender advantage, Uruguay finally found a breakthrough in the closing stages. Maxi Araújo seized on a goalkeeping mistake from Mohammed Al-Owais, firing home the equaliser to rescue a point for La Celeste.
Despite conceding late, Saudi Arabia can take enormous encouragement from their performance. Goalkeeper Al-Owais produced several crucial saves throughout the contest, helping his side withstand wave after wave of Uruguayan attacks.
For Uruguay, the draw will feel like a missed opportunity. Bielsa's men controlled large portions of the game but lacked the clinical edge needed to convert their dominance into victory. The South Americans will now face increased pressure in their remaining Group H fixtures as they seek qualification for the knockout rounds.
The result leaves Group H perfectly balanced, with all four teams level on one point following Spain's earlier draw against Cape Verde. As a consequence, the battle for qualification remains completely open heading into the second round of matches.
Final Score: Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay
Goalscorers:
• Abdulelah Al-Amri (41') – Saudi Arabia
• Maxi Araújo (80') – Uruguay
While Uruguay escaped defeat, the night belonged largely to Saudi Arabia, whose disciplined display once again demonstrated their ability to compete with football's traditional powerhouses on the biggest stage.
