Tanzania Stun Egypt on Penalties to Reach Historic CAF U-17 AFCON Final

Tanzania booked their place in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 after defeating Egypt 4-3 on penalties following a tense goalless semi-final clash on Thursday.

The thrilling encounter saw both sides battle fiercely for a place in the final, but neither team could find the breakthrough during regulation time as the match ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Egypt came close on several occasions and nearly snatched victory late in the game, but Tanzania’s defence stood firm. The East Africans also created dangerous chances of their own, with both goalkeepers producing important saves in a tightly contested affair.

With the game level at full-time, the semi-final was decided by a dramatic penalty shootout. Tanzania held their nerve from the spot, converting four of their penalties, while Egypt missed two crucial attempts as the Serengeti Boys sealed a famous 4-3 victory.

The result sends Tanzania into the CAF U-17 AFCON final for the first time in their history, continuing their remarkable run in Morocco. The East African side had earlier reached the semi-finals after edging Algeria in another dramatic penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw in the quarter-finals.

Egypt, who entered the semi-final full of confidence after thrashing Côte d’Ivoire 4-1 in the quarter-finals, were left heartbroken despite a disciplined performance.

Tanzania will now prepare for a historic final showdown as they chase continental glory and aim to crown an unforgettable tournament campaign with the championship title.

The 2026 CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations has also served as qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, with both Tanzania and Egypt already securing their places at the global tournament before the semi-finals.
