The first leg of the final qualifying round, held at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, saw the Nigerian side demonstrate why they are perennial contenders on the global stage. Despite a tense opening half where the Malawi defense held firm, Nigeria's persistence eventually broke the deadlock.
The breakthrough arrived in the second half when pressure from the Falconets forced an own goal from Malawi defender Maureen Kenneth. This opened the floodgates for the hosts, who continued to dominate possession and dictate the pace of the game.
In the 58th minute, star forward Kindness Ifeanyi doubled the lead with a clinical finish. Ifeanyi, who has been in sensational form throughout the qualifying campaign, ensured the Falconets secured a comfortable two-goal cushion to take into the return leg.
Head coach Moses Aduku expressed satisfaction with the result, noting that the team’s tactical preparation over the past month paid off. Malawi, led by coach Maggie Chombo, struggled to handle Nigeria's intensity but will look to leverage home advantage in the reverse fixture.
The Falconets now travel to Lilongwe for the second leg, scheduled for May 9 at the Bingu National Stadium. Nigeria is aiming for its twelfth consecutive appearance at the U-20 Women's World Cup, which will be hosted by Poland in 2026. A draw or even a narrow loss in Malawi will be enough to seal their ticket to the tournament.
