AFCON 2027 Draw Drama: Bafana Bafana Handed Benni McCarthy Test in Group D

The road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has officially been mapped out, and South Africa has been handed a highly fascinating and competitive campaign. Following the official group stage draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football in Cairo, Egypt, Bafana Bafana found themselves placed in Group D.

The draw sets up an emotional and historic narrative for South African football. Standing in Bafana Bafana’s way is none other than national team legend Benni McCarthy, who currently serves as the head coach of group opponents Kenya. McCarthy remains South Africa’s all-time record goalscorer with 31 international goals, but his tactical mind will now be focused on plotting the downfall of his home nation.

Joining South Africa and Kenya in Group D are West African powerhouses Guinea and the resilient underdogs Eritrea. This unique mix of teams promises to deliver a captivating series of matches for football fans across the continent.

As host nation, Kenya has already secured automatic qualification for the final tournament alongside co-hosts Uganda and Tanzania. Because Kenya is in Group D, the qualification rules adjust slightly. Only one additional team from this specific pool will earn a ticket to the main tournament, heavily increasing the pressure on Hugo Broos and his South African squad. Bafana Bafana must essentially aim to finish at the very top or outperform Guinea and Eritrea to ensure their spot in East Africa.

The qualifying format across the other groups will see the top two teams advance, narrowing down the 48 competing nations to the final 24. The 2027 AFCON tournament, officially known as the PAMOJA edition, is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

South Africa entered the draw with a slight structural advantage, having been placed in Pot 1 alongside heavyweights like Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt thanks to their steady rise under Hugo Broos. While avoiding those giants is a massive relief, a group containing Guinea's flair, Kenya's motivated squad under McCarthy, and a tricky trip to Eritrea means qualification is far from a formality.

The battle lines have been drawn, and the continental qualifiers will officially kick off later this year. The intense schedule spans across three distinct international windows, starting with matchdays one and two in September, followed by rounds three and four in November, and wrapping up with the decisive final matchdays in March 2027. Bafana Bafana fans can already look forward to a spectacular tactical chess match when their beloved national team goes head-to-head with their greatest-ever striker.
