In a touching and powerful gesture, the DR Congo national team — through their captain — has formally requested that iconic superfan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga (popularly known as Lumumba) be included in the official delegation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The players want to ensure that the man who has become a global symbol of Congolese passion and resilience is present in North America to support Les Léopards, even if it requires full logistical and financial support from the federation or government.
Who is Lumumba?
Lumumba rose to international fame during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he stood motionless for the entire duration of every DR Congo match, mimicking the famous statue of Patrice Lumumba (the country’s first Prime Minister). His silent, dignified tribute captured hearts across Africa and beyond, turning him into one of the most recognisable faces in African football fandom.
Despite his viral fame, Lumumba was unable to travel to Mexico for the intercontinental playoff against Jamaica due to visa complications, even after making desperate attempts in Kenya and Ethiopia. He watched the historic qualification match from Kinshasa, standing motionless in front of a giant screen.
A Squad That Cares
The players’ request comes shortly after DR Congo qualified for the 2026 World Cup for the first time since 1974. It shows the deep bond between the team and its most devoted supporter. By asking for Lumumba to be part of the official delegation, the squad is sending a clear message: this journey belongs to the people — and Lumumba is an essential part of it.
This move has been widely praised as a beautiful display of unity, gratitude, and humanity from the Leopards.
As DR Congo prepare for their first World Cup appearance in over five decades, having Lumumba in the stands (or as part of the official group) would add an emotional and symbolic layer to what is already a historic moment for the nation.
We hope the authorities grant this special request so that Lumumba can finally experience the World Cup live alongside the team he has supported so passionately.
