Senegal Defiantly Parades Disputed AFCON 2025 Trophy before Peru Friendly in Paris Despite CAF Ruling

Senegal’s players celebrated like champions on Saturday, March 28, 2026, lifting the Africa Cup of Nations trophy high at the Stade de France — even though the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stripped them of the title just weeks earlier.

In a powerful show of defiance, captain Kalidou Koulibaly led his teammates onto the pitch for a lap of honour with the iconic gold trophy before Senegal’s international friendly against Peru. Goalkeeper Édouard Mendy held the cup aloft as thousands of fans — many from Paris’s large Senegalese diaspora — cheered wildly. Koulibaly and Mendy later carried the trophy to the presidential box, presenting it to Senegalese Football Federation president Abdoulaye Fall and other dignitaries.

The pre-match celebrations included a vibrant concert by Senegalese music legend Youssou N’Dour and came just days after Senegal added a second star to their national team kit — symbolising their 2021 and (disputed) 2025 AFCON triumphs.

The Controversy That Sparked the Defiance

The parade was the latest chapter in one of African football’s most chaotic sagas. In January 2026, Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 in extra time in the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat. The match was marred by drama: Morocco was awarded a late penalty, prompting Senegal’s players to protest and briefly leave the field (causing a 15-17 minute delay). Senegal still scored the winner in extra time.

Morocco’s football federation appealed. On March 17, 2026, CAF’s appeals board ruled that Senegal had “forfeited the final,” overturning the 1-0 result to a 3-0 default victory for Morocco and awarding the hosts the title. Senegal was ordered to return the trophy.

Senegal immediately appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), calling the decision “the most grossly unfair administrative robbery in the history of soccer.” Federation president Abdoulaye Fall vowed to defend the players’ honour, while the Senegalese government pushed for an investigation into alleged corruption at CAF. The case remains ongoing, with Senegal requesting an expedited process.

“The Party Doesn’t Stop”

Despite the ruling, Senegal made it clear they still see themselves as Africa’s champions. “Senegal will not bend the knee,” one federation official declared ahead of the Paris trip. The team arrived in France determined to celebrate their on-pitch achievement in front of home-away-from-home fans.

The friendly itself ended in a 2-0 win for Senegal, with goals from Nicolas Jackson (41′) and Ismaïla Sarr (54′). It marked their first match since the controversial final and served as important preparation for the 2026 World Cup, where they face France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq.

A Statement Heard Across Africa

The trophy parade quickly went viral, with fans across the continent praising Senegal’s resilience. Many viewed the act as a stand against perceived administrative overreach by CAF.

Whether CAS ultimately restores Senegal’s title remains to be seen. But on Saturday night in Paris, one thing was unmistakable: the Lions of Teranga refused to hand over their moment — or their trophy — without a fight.
