LIVERPOOL IN CRISIS: Alexander Isak Faces Suspected Broken Leg After Tottenham Horror Tackle

LONDON — Liverpool’s medical department is working around the clock as the club awaits definitive scan results for record-signing Alexander Isak, following a distressing injury during Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Swedish international, who arrived at Anfield in a landmark £125 million deal from Newcastle last summer, was forced off just 11 minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute. The injury occurred in the act of scoring the opening goal, as Spurs defender Micky van de Ven flew into a desperate sliding challenge that caught Isak’s planted left leg.

"Not a Good Thing" — Arne Slot Wary

While Isak managed to find the back of the net to give Liverpool the lead, he was unable to celebrate, instead collapsing in visible agony. Despite being able to limp toward the tunnel with significant assistance from two physios, reports from The Athletic and Sky Sports on Monday suggest the club’s "gut feeling" is a fractured fibula or tibia.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, manager Arne Slot did little to downplay the concerns:

"If a player scores, gets injured, and doesn't even try to come back on the pitch, that is usually not a good thing. It is too early for a medical diagnosis, but my gut feeling is not positive. We have to wait for the scans, but let’s hope for the best."

A Massive Blow to Title Hopes

The timing of the injury could not be worse for the Reds. With Mohamed Salah currently away on international duty with Egypt for AFCON 2025 and Cody Gakpo sidelined until the New Year with a muscle strain, Liverpool’s attacking options have been decimated.

Current Fit Forwards:

  • Hugo Ekitiké: The in-form Frenchman who scored the winner against Spurs.

  • Federico Chiesa: Yet to find consistent minutes since his move from Juventus.

  • Luis Díaz: Currently on loan/permanent at Bayern Munich (as per recent transfer movements).

Refereeing Controversy

The incident has also sparked a wave of fury among Liverpool fans and staff. Many are questioning why VAR did not intervene to recommend a red card for Van de Ven, given the force of the tackle and the resulting injury. Former referees have described the lack of a booking as "astonishing," especially in a match that saw Spurs' Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero both sent off for separate incidents.

If a break is confirmed, Isak could face four to six months on the sidelines, likely ending his 2025/26 Premier League season.
