AFCON 2025: Heavyweights Collide as Egypt and South Africa Headline Group B Openers

MARRAKECH/AGADIR
— The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations shifts into high gear today as Group B action commences in Morocco. All eyes will be on the continent's most decorated side, Egypt, as they face Zimbabwe, while regional rivals South Africa and Angola prepare for a high-stakes showdown in Marrakech.

Salah Seeks Redemption as Egypt Face Zimbabwe

In Agadir, the Egyptian national team begins its quest for a record-extending eighth continental title. The spotlight remains firmly fixed on captain Mohamed Salah, for whom this tournament is widely seen as a final opportunity to secure AFCON glory.

Despite a turbulent period at Liverpool—marked by a public spat with manager Arne Slot—Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan insists his talisman is in peak psychological condition.

"Salah’s morale is very high, as if he were just starting out with the national team," Hassan told reporters during his pre-match briefing. "He has an able supporting cast this time, including Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush, and we believe he will deliver a strong tournament."

The "Pharaohs" face a Zimbabwe side led by new manager Mario Marinică. The "Warriors" enter the competition as underdogs but remain a dangerous prospect, with Marinică expected to deploy a compact defensive block designed to frustrate Egypt’s elite frontline.

Bafana Bafana Look to Maintain Momentum Against Angola

Earlier in Marrakech, 2023 bronze medalists South Africa take on Angola in a match that could define the battle for the group's second qualifying spot.

Bafana Bafana arrive in Morocco as one of the continent’s most consistent teams, currently boasting a 26-match unbeaten run across all competitions. However, head coach Hugo Broos has had to navigate a difficult arrival in Morocco, involving a grueling 26-hour journey and lost luggage.

"The journey was very difficult, but football does not allow excuses," Broos remarked. "We know Angola is a team capable of causing problems, as they showed by reaching the quarter-finals in the last edition."

Angola, led by Patrice Beaumelle, will look to build on their recent success. The "Palancas Negras" feature several Europe-based stars and will rely on the pace of Zito Luvumbo and the goal-scoring pedigree of Gelson Dala to test the South African defense, marshaled by captain and CAF Goalkeeper of the Year nominee, Ronwen Williams.
