Super Eagles Anxiously Await Osimhen Injury Update Ahead of South Africa Clash

A cloud of concern has fallen over the Super Eagles camp following star striker Victor Osimhen's ankle injury during Nigeria's 1-0 win over Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Osimhen was forced off the pitch in the 35th minute of the crucial match, after which he was replaced by Cyriel Dessers. Following the game, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle addressed the press, confirming the injury but offering no definite timeline for his return.

"I can't say much about Victor for now. He has pain in his ankle, we will see when he wakes up tomorrow," Chelle stated, adding that he would "discuss with the team doctors to see whether he will be available for the game" against South Africa.

The injury is a significant blow for the Nigerian national team as they prepare for a monumental showdown with Group C leaders South Africa. Osimhen's absence would be a major setback, as the forward is a key attacking force for the Super Eagles and had scored both goals in the reverse fixture against Rwanda.

The team, which secured a vital win thanks to a goal from substitute Toluwalase Arokodare, will now have to plan for its next critical encounter with the uncertainty of their talisman's fitness. All eyes will be on the medical staff's assessment to determine if Osimhen can feature in the pivotal match that could define Nigeria's World Cup qualification fate.
