Rivers United Edge Past Les Aigles to Book CAF Champions League Second Round Spot

Rivers United of Nigeria secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Les Aigles du Congo of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, September 28, 2025, to advance to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The win at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo sealed a 1-0 aggregate triumph for the Nigerian champions, who successfully navigated a tense first-round tie against the resilient Congolese side.

The Decisive Moment

The tie, which was delicately poised following a goalless (0-0) draw in the first leg in Kinshasa, was ultimately decided by a single moment of brilliance and opportunistic finishing just before the halftime whistle.

Defender Stephen Manyo was the hero for the "Pride of Rivers," rising highest to head home the decisive goal in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time (45+6'). The goal came from a set-piece, punishing a momentary lapse in concentration by the Les Aigles defense. The goal proved to be the difference-maker, giving Rivers United a crucial lead to defend for the remainder of the contest.

A Tense Second Half

Rivers United, under the guidance of Coach Finidi George, knew only a victory would see them through. After finding the breakthrough, the second half saw the Nigerian side remain disciplined, managing the game effectively while repelling attacks from the visitors, who desperately searched for an equalizer that would force penalties.

Despite a solid defensive performance from the Congolese team throughout the 180 minutes of the tie, Manyo’s powerful header was the quality moment needed to break the deadlock and end Les Aigles' continental journey in the first preliminary round.

Qualification Secured

The 1-0 aggregate win means Rivers United successfully secure their passage to the second and final qualifying round for the group stage of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League. They will now face the winner of the tie between AC Léopards of Congo Brazzaville and Black Bulls of Mozambique for a place in the coveted group stage.
