Rangers suffered a disappointing start to their UEFA Europa League campaign at Ibrox on Thursday, falling 0-1 to Belgian side KRC Genk in a match riddled with drama and controversy.
The only goal of the night was scored by Genk striker Oh Hyeon-gyu in the 55th minute, who found the net on his return to Glasgow to seal all three points for the visitors. The South Korea international, a former Celtic player, had earlier missed a golden opportunity just before halftime when his penalty kick was saved by Rangers' goalkeeper Jack Butland.
Rangers' European opener was derailed late in the first half when midfielder Mohamed Diomande was shown a straight red card in the 41st minute for a reckless challenge. Down to ten men, the home side struggled to contain Genk in the second half.
Despite Butland's penalty heroics keeping the score level at the break, Oh finally broke the deadlock, slipping a pass from Jarne Steuckers beyond the keeper to give Genk the lead.
The 0-1 defeat, marked by a lack of discipline and a failure to register a single shot on target after the 34th minute, sees manager Russell Martin's side begin their European journey on a sour note and increases pressure on the team.
