10-Man Sunderland Fight Back to Secure a Point Against Winless Aston Villa

A display of grit and determination saw 10-man Sunderland rescue a point at the Stadium of Light, holding Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw. The hosts battled bravely after being reduced to a player disadvantage for more than an hour when Reinildo received a reckless red card before halftime.

Aston Villa looked set to secure their first victory of the season when Matty Cash ended the team's long top-flight goal drought. However, Sunderland's fan favorite Wilson Isidor continued his impressive scoring run, netting for the third consecutive league game at home to level the match. Despite being at a disadvantage, Sunderland remarkably edged the expected goals (xG) with 1.05 to Villa's 0.7. The visitors' hopes for a win were dashed late on, as Ollie Watkins missed a golden chance to snatch the victory.

The draw means Sunderland are only the third newly-promoted team in the last seven Premier League seasons to win as many as eight points from their first five games. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's struggle continues, as they have now failed to win any of their first five league games of a campaign for only the fourth time in their history.

Wilson Isidor's goal also etched his name in the record books as the first player since Steven Bergwijn in 2019-20 to score in each of his first three Premier League home appearances. Next, Sunderland will travel to face Nottingham Forest, while Aston Villa must prepare for a Europa League opener against Bologna.
