Tragedy Averted as Governor Dapo Abiodun Swiftly Rescues Injured Tunisian Athletes in Abeokuta Accident

A potential tragedy was averted in Abeokuta on Saturday, July 19, 2025, when athletes from Tunisia were involved in a road traffic accident while participating in the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships. The incident occurred as the delegation was returning from the competition venue to the Games Village in a vehicle that was not under the organized safety convoy mandated for such transport.

In a remarkable turn of events, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, was commuting along the same route when the accident occurred. The Governor immediately intervened, providing critical first-response assistance. Injured athletes were quickly transported to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, where they received immediate care before being moved to a better-equipped facility for further treatment.

Officials confirmed that the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Governor were both present at the hospital shortly after the accident, personally monitoring the medical care being administered. The NSC is also in constant communication with the Tunisian team leadership to ensure the athletes’ full recovery.

The NSC extended heartfelt sympathy to the affected athletes, their families, and the Tunisian delegation, while also commending the swift response of the Ogun State Government, medical personnel, and security agencies.

The incident highlights the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols, and the NSC reaffirmed that the well-being of all participants remains a top priority throughout the competition.
