Peter Obi Hails Super Eagles’ Unity Cup Triumph, Mourns Kano Athletes Lost in Tragic Crash.......
Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has shared a heartfelt message reflecting on the emotional highs and lows of a remarkable day of sports, national pride, and tragic loss.Writing on his social media platform after attending the Unity Cup final between Nigeria and Jamaica at the Gtech Community Stadium in Brentford, UK, Obi praised the match as more than just a game. The thrilling encounter ended 2-2 in regular time, with the Super Eagles of Nigeria triumphing 5-4 in a penalty shootout to lift the 2025 Unity Cup.
Obi, who had earlier been engaged at the London Business School, described the atmosphere at the stadium as electric and inspiring. “It was not just a game—it was a moving celebration of our unity, culture, and the indomitable spirit of Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora,” he wrote.
He lauded the organizers of the Unity Cup for reviving the initiative and using it as a platform to unite Nigerians and showcase the country's rich heritage and sporting talent.
However, the day’s joy was tragically overshadowed by the devastating news of a fatal accident involving the Kano State sports delegation. Reports confirmed that 22 athletes and officials lost their lives in a road crash while returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
Obi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, urging the nation to reflect on the tragedy even amidst celebration. “As we continue to support initiatives that promote unity and national pride, let us also spare a moment to reflect on the lives lost and the families who now mourn,” he said.
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased, the National Sports Commission, and the Kano State Government, praying for strength in this difficult time and for the souls of the departed to rest in peace.
Peter Obi’s message captured both the uplifting power of sports and the sobering reminder of life’s fragility, calling on Nigerians to stay united in hope, celebration, and grief.
