Leicester City finally gave their fans something to cheer about at the King Power Stadium, ending a nine-game home scoring drought with a 2-0 win over Southampton—their 15th Premier League victory over the Saints, more than against any other club.
Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with a clinical first-time finish after being set up by Bilal El Khannouss, netting Leicester’s first home league goal since December and marking his 199th goal for the club. The veteran striker now stands on the cusp of a historic double-century before his expected summer departure.
The game’s oddest moment came when referee David Webb was replaced by Sam Barrott, having suffered a blow to the head. Soon after, Jordan Ayew, the inadvertent culprit, added Leicester’s second—rifling home a rebound after his initial free-kick was blocked.
Despite some late pressure from Southampton, including a Paul Onuachu header that struck the side netting, the Foxes were rarely troubled. El Khannouss could have added more gloss to the scoreline but was wasteful in front of goal.
The result means Southampton suffer a fourth straight league loss to Leicester for the first time in their history, and will now finish bottom of the Premier League table. Though both teams had already been relegated, Leicester's performance offered a rare bright spot in a difficult season—reflected by their higher xG (1.27 vs. 0.53).
