Despite Liverpool taking the lead twice through goals from Harvey Elliott and Dominik Szoboszlai, the Seagulls showed resilience and character to fight back on both occasions. Ayari struck first to cancel out Elliott's opener, before second-half substitute Kaoru Mitoma levelled the score once more.
The decisive moment came late on as Jack Hinshelwood tapped in a dramatic winner from an O'Riley cross, initially ruled out for offside. However, semi-automated offside technology confirmed the goal, securing all three points for Brighton and lifting them three points clear in eighth place with one game to play.
The result ends Liverpool's extraordinary 156-game unbeaten streak when leading at half-time (W142 D14), dating back to December 2016. It also marks the first time the Reds have lost a Premier League game in which they led twice since a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in 2004.
Despite the defeat, Liverpool became just the third team in Premier League history to score in 100% of their away matches in a single season, joining Arsenal and Manchester United (both in 2001-02), and setting a new club record with goals in 21 consecutive away league games.
