Qatar 2022: Fernandes brace seal Portugal's knockout stage

It was a slow first half, though Uruguay arguably should have led at the break after Bentacur's golden chance was wasted.

Portugal kept pushing after the break and took the lead with their first shot on target.

Fernandes curled what was supposed to be a cross straight into the net and though Ronaldo tried to claim the header, but he didn't get a touch.

A dubious handball decision went against Gimenez and Fernandes cooly slotted it home, before being denied a hat-trick by the post deep in stoppage time.

Portugal are now into the round of 16 with a game to spare, and will just need a point against South Korea to finish top of the group in their final game.

Uruguay can still qualify for the knockout rounds, but they will need to beat Ghana and hope South Korea do not win.
