South Africa had the ball in the back of the net with 17 minutes gone as Judas Moseamedi broke free before slotting past the goalkeeper, although the goal was incorrectly ruled out after the linesman had flagged for offside.
Tanzania then added salt to the wounds as they broke up the other end to open the scoring themselves, Elias Maguri timing his run well before angling home with the outside of his boot, despite Boalefa Pule getting a glove to the ball.
South Africa worked a good chance in the closing stages of the first-half as a free-kick was headed back into the area, where Moseamedi attempted the spectacular but failed to get a proper connection on his bicycle and the keeper easily gathered the ball.
The second half began with Tanzania on the front foot as they looked to extend their lead, Maguri and Ramadhani trying their luck from range, but to no avail.
Bafana then upped the tempo as they went in search of an equaliser, Riyaad Norodien whipping in a free-kick which was cleared by the Tanzanian defence before Jamie Webber’s through-ball failed to find a teammate minutes later.
Webber then tried a shot at goal from an audacious angle which went out for a goal-kick, with the South Africans looking disjointed in attack and failing to threaten the Tanzanian shot-stopper.
Moseamedi then showed good strength in jostling with his marker at the byline before managing to put in a square ball into the box, yet once again no teammate was on hand to bury the ball home.
Bafana looked desperate in the closing stages, Thendo Mukumela trying his luck from distance but failing to find the target, before a glorious chance fell to Lorenzo Gordinho in stoppage time, yet the Kaizer Chiefs defender missed the target with the goal at his mercy.
South Africa now face Botswana in the Cosafa Cup plate semi-finals on Tuesday while Tanzania face off against Zambia in the cup semi-finals on Wednesday.
