Despite showing heart and flashes of promise in Group B, The Mares finished third with three points, following one win and two defeats. Their fate then rested on Monday night’s Group C fixture, where a draw between Ghana and Tanzania would have granted Botswana qualification as one of the two best third-placed teams.
However, Ghana’s dominant performance and emphatic 4–1 victory not only secured the Black Queens a quarter-final spot but also confirmed Botswana’s elimination from the tournament.
A Campaign of Courage and Growth
Throughout the group stage, The Mares exhibited growth, grit, and tactical improvement, highlighted by a thrilling last-minute win over Tunisia. Players such as Lesego Radiakanyo and Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse stood out with inspired performances, while head coach Mohambi Ranko praised the team's unity and resilience.
While the exit at the group stage will sting, the experience gained on the continental stage will serve as a valuable building block for Botswana’s future in women’s football.
“They have inspired a nation with their effort, and we are proud of their journey,” the Botswana Football Association stated in a message of support after the elimination.
Looking Ahead
The Mares now turn their focus to regional and continental qualifiers ahead of the next WAFCON and the expanding FIFA Women’s World Cup cycle. Backed by sponsors such as FNB Botswana, Lucara Botswana, O3 Beverages, All Kasi Clothing Co., and the Botswana National Sport Commission, the team continues to grow in visibility and support.
Though their 2024 WAFCON chapter has ended, Botswana departs Morocco with their heads held high, a deeper squad, and a foundation to build on.
